Retired Professor 2021-07-26 14:17:02
First of all, I’d like to thank Rob Moore for mentioning me in his update. I’m sometimes surprised when anyone remembers me at all, let alone that they would consider me worthy of mention. Honestly, I sometimes wonder if I remember me from back then, myself.

Anyway, life has taken me through a variety of twists and turns. Mostly everything’s been fine, here are a few highlights.

1973: Too bored with school to even think about applying to medical school. Graduate the following year without a clue what life will bring next.

Late ‘70s: Pursue a career in dance, including 2 years in NYC. Study modern at the Martha Graham School (take class from Martha herself a few times). Study ballet with Maggie Black, teacher to the stars (which I was not, but some days I look back and think I was pretty good); shared the barre with many famous dancers from companies such as American Ballet Theatre, NYC Ballet, The Joffrey, Martha Graham, Twyla Tharp, and more. Once did pirouettes, etc., next to Natalia Makarova (perhaps the most famous ballerina of those days) but was too in awe to pay attention to what I was doing.

Early ‘80s: Get into whitewater kayaking while working toward my Ph.D. in physics. Run many famous rivers, including Hell’s Canyon on the Snake, the Rogue, the Middle Fork of the Salmon, the Illinois, and so on. Manage to finish my Ph.D., as well, in theoretical physics, 1986.

1989-1990: Live in Tel Aviv, Israel, working as a postdoctoral researcher. Stay until well after the first Gulf war begins, but am eventually convinced by friends it makes no sense to stay any longer. Somewhere over the Atlantic while flying back to the U.S., we get news of the first scud missiles landing near Tel Aviv.

1986 to present: Iyengar yoga. I have practiced yoga every day now for over 30 years. It has been a central focus of my life these past few decades. Study with B.K.S. Iyengar and Geeta Iyengar in Pune, India, winter of 1990.

Somehow find my way to a tenured faculty position in the Physics Department at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Solve the occasional long-standing unsolved problem, but generally too late for anyone to still care. Retired from teaching in 2012 but still do research. Have worked in quantum information theory for over a decade. My latest paper solves a long-standing problem that people might just still care about. We will see.

2015 Make a feature-length film with my niece. Well, she made the film, wrote and directed it, but I helped. "The Last Hot Lick", available on Amazon and elsewhere. Anyone remember Dan Hicks?

Over almost all these 50+ years, I have avoided political activism. I thought what was important was how we treat each other on an individual basis, so didn’t see politics as critical. The election of 2016 changed my mind about that conclusion. Ever since then, and continuing to the present day, I have been very involved with a progressive activist group. (I mention this not to invite political arguments, but only include it as one of my highlights over the past 50 years).

2021 has been a difficult year, for many of us I guess. I’m hesitant to attend a large, crowded gathering, especially with “delta” out there lurking. Being vaccinated, I guess I’m safe, but it still may not be prudent. I haven’t decided for sure yet, but it seems unlikely I’ll be joining you. Living in Portland again now, I guess I’ll be able to change my mind at the last moment.

Prsently managing the western region (SF and LA ) for Guidepost Solutions.

After 28 years of marriage and three children my divorce was final in Dec 2018. Just before the pandemic I met a womderful woman (Susan) and we've been togther ever since. I live in Greembrae in Marin County on Corte Madera Creek where I learned to row just before Marin Rowing Assocaition shut down owing to the pandenic.

Work still takes up most of my time but I manage to swim 3 miles a week, ride my bike and manange a round of golf several times a month.

To be continued....

First of all, I actually didn't graduate from LOHS because my family moved to California in my junior year, but I feel much more connected to my Oregon classmates than I do to the ones in California. After all, I knew many of my LOHS friends from grade school at Riverdale. Anyway, nice to be included.

I have 3 kids and 4 grandkids. I've spent at least 20 years working for an entertainer (not famous!) and recently spend a lot of my time playing tennis. Hey, it's almost a full time job! We also were very involved with our grandkids, at least we were before the virus hit. That will continue at some point. We are very fortunate to have the life we live. Looking forward to seeing some of you whenever that may be!

Debbie and I have been married for almost 35 years. We are both "sort of" retired; she will be teaching in the West Linn/Wilsonville School District for one more year, while I continue to work with some individual clients within my consulting business,

Our two boys are grown; Chris lives in Lake Oswego and Andrew lives in Denver. That's the rumor.

Over the years, family activities have continued to be in fine arts and athletics. I am now officially the worst athlete in the family. Debbie and I have had the good fortune of doing a great amount of travelling over the years, which should pick up even more in the days ahead.

Some things never change: in over 50 years, I have never lost to Brad Richards in any track or cross country race. He has finally found peace, and is a better person for it.

I have three children, two grandchildren and one on the way. They are a precious gift!!!
Its been great working on the committee all these years and connecting with old friends!!!
I hope to see everyone on Friday Night . Unfortunately I have a Saturday night wedding and will miss seeing everybody . The Reunion is going to be great!!! One of our best yet  The Lake Theater holds many memories for all of us, so sign up and Enjoy.

Things have changed since our last reunion! I now have five grandchildren! They bring such joy to our lives! I feel so lucky that they all live close to us! Family, Friends and Travel have kept us busy!
It is hard to believe it's been 50 years since we graduated! I look forward to the day we can all get together and celebrate! Until that time, say safe!

It's been quite a year, and a bit of a roller coaster!  But I cherish my family and friends and feel very blessed. My youngest son Tracy was married (he's the last one) in January of 2021, Covid style. ( Outside with just family) Although it was not quite what we had envisioned, it was beautiful and Liz is a wonderful addition to our family! We were lucky enough to be able to travel to Hawaii this past May! It was a trip we had planned for over a year and one that had been pushed out from our original date! It was very special to be there with my whole family including my nephew and his famiy. If nothing else this pandemic has taught me to cherish what we Had, what we Have and to hold on Tight! Unfortunately I will miss you all at the reunion this August! i am out of town with Family! I look forward to hearing all about it! Lets not wait five years to meet again!
Take Care and Continue to stay safe!

Umm, didn't we just graduate?  Looking back over 51 years feels a bit like waking from a dream.  It's just that the dream is more Plan B than Plan A from high school.

So I drifted through several colleges and degrees, finally getting a Master of Public Admin.  Worked as an analyst with the US Dept of Housing & Urban Development until Reagan was elected and discovered the agency benefitted the homeless.  Then it was 34 years in commercial real estate.  I was fortunate to work on projects with the Urban League of Portland, Catholic Charities, St. Vincent de Paul, and Jesuit HS.

In 1981 met Corvallis girl Nancy Reiman through Steve Collinson.  (Thanks Steve!).  We were married in 1982, and proceeded to have four kids.  Our two daughters live in L.O. and our youngest son lives in Vancouver.  Some know that our son Brett died in 2004.  We wondered if we would ever recover, but peace did eventually come.  We are very grateful for the kindness and support we received from many people, including many LOHS classmates.

Now we hang out with seven grandkids and spend a lot of time remodeling an old money pit in S Burlingame.  I try to volunteer one or two mornings a week at Blanchet House in downtown Portland.  It's an eye-opener, and not very glamorous, but I do get to chop vegetables and hand out oatmeal for breakfast... For sanity, I maintain a steady practice of meditation, long walks with a big dog and wine consumption.

Looking forward to reconnecting with the "continuing to evolve" versions of ourselves!

I am sorry to say that I won't be attending our reunion this year.  The U.S. has implemented a non-essential travel ban to August 21st and I have had to cancel all of my plans.  I was really looking forward to seeing all of you on the Friday and Saturday nights.  I guess, if all goes well, I will see you for the 55th reunion in 2025.  Stupid Covid, grrrrr.
I wish you all well, have fun and be safe!!!

One of the first things I did was look at reunion photos.  I wondered, "Where did all those old folks come from?" (Then I looked in a mirror...) Living in Sandy, OR.  Worked a number of jobs, mostly at City of Gresham in Environmental Services Dept., Water Div., construction crew., mainly as a utility loator.
Place at Nationals competition twice.  What's most important now? Being a follower of Jesus.  Attend Good Sshepherd church in Boring.  Basic tenants: Love God, Love people.  Simple, right?  Except "I" keeps getting in the way. Current interests: kids, music, some sports, reading, philosophy, science, people.  If life slows down, I'll start catching up on some of the posts at this site.  KE.

After graduating from U of O, I worked for a non profit in LA; went back to school in Boston for a Masters, married a Boston native, and settled in New England.  I worked in fisheries management on Cape Cod and Gloucester, MA.  My husband and I renovated an old ark of a house in Gloucester, and had a lot of fun doing it….but dammit, he passed away before he could enjoy the finished product.  While he and I had no children, thanks to my current partner I now have step children and grandchildren too!  I love New England and spend as much time outside as I can—dog walks, gardening, and kayaking.  I get back to Oregon every few years, but this is not one of them.  Best wishes from Gloucester.                  Send Hannah a MessageSend Hannah a Message
